CRAG are organising a lane clearance on a UCR in the Brecon Beacon National Park. The location to meet is at SO 037 237. The lane at present is very overgrown, we would ask people to bring hand tools only, i.e. loppers, spades etc., a Hi-Viz vest and packed lunch.

Simon Stirley is planning an event for February 26th 2006.

I suggest meeting at 10am at the western end of the lane, near Shudy Camps (TL 62185 43975) as the council have done some work there recently already. We can then drive along the lane until we find the first bit that needs work and take it from there. Regular tools such as loppers/secateurs and spades should be enough I think.

Hope to see some of you there. Simon Stirley, Cambridgeshire GLASS Rep.

Additionally he has some ongoing clearance work on a BOAT which volunteers can help with throughout the year. Contact him for more details.

In East Hampshire National Green Lane Day will be taking place on Sunday the 5th of March, ie weekend after the 'official' date of the 26th of February. We have targeted 'Horndean 48' (Tagdell Lane) (BNG reference SU 686137 to SU 689133) and 'Horndean 13', (SU 688135 to SU 691141) a couple of small Byways near Horndean (a couple of miles north of Portsmouth).

Tagdell Lane is used regularly by all classes of user, however the amount of room available for horses and four wheeled vehicles to pass is limited at the northwest end. There is also a quantity of rubbish scattered along
the lane, including the remains of a car is completely buried in the hedge!

Horndean 13 on the other hand has had little use by equestrians or four wheeled vehicles in recent years due to the encroaching and overhanging vegetation. As you might suspect, the 5th will be a classic vegetation
clearance and rubbish removal exercise.

We will be meeting at Morrison's car park (SU 702125, just off the A3(M)) at 09:30 for a departure to the site at 09:45. Alternatively meet that the northwest end of Tagdell Lane (SU 686137 ) at 10:00. Full work instructions, Health and Safety briefing and 'tool talk' will be provided at the start of the session. It is expected that the work will be completed by early afternoon but don't feel obliged to stay till the bitter end. Any contribution is always welcome.

Tools and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided but feel free to bring your favourite bow saw or oppers if you like. Please do not bring motorised implements (eg chainsaws) unless you have current certificate to use them. Dogs, children, mother-in-laws etc are all welcome as long as they are kept under control (we have never had any problems in the past!).

All the work will be undertaken under Hampshire County Council's (HCC) Hampshire Paths Partnership (HPP) scheme and is covered by their insurance. A site survey/risk assessment has been conducted, landowners ontacted and notices put up on the lane. Qualified first aiders will be in attendance.

If you would like any more information please contact me. Thank you in advance for your support.

The Hertfordshire group will be carrying out maintenance on BOAT 9 Monks Green, UID TL 3308-2A. This lane becomes very overgrown in the summer & as there are ditches on both sides can become quite tricky to drive, we therefore intend to cut back the hedgerow to open it up.

Meeting at 09:30 for a 10:00am start at GR. TL 336 099 which is the north eastern end of the lane at the junction of Mangrove Road.

Please bring work gloves, clippers, loppers, etc. & a hi-vis coat/waistcoat if you have one.

Nottinghamshire GLASS and TRF members will be working on a lane with Notts CC ROW dept. The lane was upgraded by DMMO from a Footpath and is now a BOAT.

The lane is presently blocked at both ends and overgrown. It will be cut back and the obstructions removed.

Contacts Ed Cairns South Nottinghamshire GLASS rep or Simon Wilson North
Nottinghamshire GLASS rep if you wish to volunteer. Nottinghamshire CC want us to keep control of the volunteer to council employee ratio as they are using their own insurance etc.

PCC have only let us do one project.

We have agreed to undertake a repair to a UCR in the Dyfnant Forest.

Rendevous location is at the crossroads in the centre of the forest at SJ 005 143. You can get here by entering the forest at SJ 019 132 and then bearing left onto the main track that heads west then north – this will bring you to the centre of the forest at the main crossroads.

Alternatively, meet at Little Chef on Oswestry Bypass at 09:00 (SJ 309 284) and then travel to the RV in convoy with the benefit of an experienced guide!

We have a rather large hole to fill with stone and then put a bit of a surface on top. If we get a good turnout we should be clear by lunchtime and we can go laning.

Please wear steel toecap boots

The lane that had been planned for Worcestershire is a non starter as explained in the email below, so Matt will be organising alternatives. To help him with his planning, please contact him if you would like to do something.

"Dear Matt,

I have contacted DEFRA re a badger licence, as you remember it was a little rushed before Christmas to get a licence before the season when setts are more sensitive. This means that we can't do work in this area until late March / April time. We are looking at whether there is any other work you could do and I'll be talking to Kevin tomorrow about this. There is a variety of work that does need doing but as you will appreciate most work is on footpaths and bridleways.

I will be in touch soon,

Amanda"

To one and all,

Due to problems with staffing in the Rights of Way Department of East Sussex County Council, we have been unable to get permission for any work for next weekends NGLD (again)! We may have to rethink the way we approach this next time. Perhaps we should find somewhere to work on first and then apply for permission afterwards!

Best regards,

Clive

Surrey County Council do not have a fully trained volunteer coordinator in place at present, so are unwilling to let formal NGLD work take place. Instead if you are out laning please can you do a bit of surveying, making a note of current and potential problems and send me the information with grid references.
